THE POSTERS FOR LIFE PROJECT
MENTAL HEALTH POSTERS
devised, designed, printed and distributed
by self-help groups in Derry, London and Milton Keynes
in collaboration with Annie and Ken Meharg.
The posters illustrated are:
1 “Why can’t I be understood by white psychiatrists?”
2 “Women and mental health”
3 “Something cooking – could be you!”
4 “Doctor or pusher? – Patient or junkie? There must be another way”
5 “Self advocacy group”
6 “Call yourself doctor, therapist, social worker, psychiatric nurse…
but DON’T LABEL ME!”
7 “Just ‘cause a tree wentround the bend – don’t say it won’t
blossom in the end.”
8 “Don’t panic – come to MK Agoraphobia group”
9 “Who cares? – Foyle Mental Health”
Since the 1980’s we have been running POSTERS FOR LIFE workshops with
mental health self-help groups in various locations in Britain and Ireland including
the MIND day centre and the CAMPHILL COMMUNITY in Milton Keynes, Afro-Caribbean
mental health groups in Camden and Islington, and Foyle Mental Health and The
Beacon Centre in Derry.
Participants whose experiences and opinions are often ignored gain access to
a powerful means of communication in making full colour A2 screenprinted posters.
Some participants make posters to advertise their group and to inform people
who are isolated that they are not alone – there are groups of people with
similar experiences in their area who can offer friendship, understanding, support,
information and opportunities for learning new skills.
Others use the posters to explain their feelings and experiences to a wider
public, and some address their posters directly to the health services which
they feel have misunderstood them and failed to help them.
“Why can’t I be understood by white psychiatrists?” is a poster
which was made by an Afro-Caribbean man from the Milton Keynes MIND daycentre
in our workshop in 1990. This poster has stimulated a lot of discussion about
the problem of the psychiatrist coming from a different culture from the person
seeking help, and failing to distinguish between cultural differences and psychiatric
problems.

Le project « Posters for Life »
